[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The Fair Trade Commission will detect Coupang's subcontracting and algorithmic manipulation and impose astronomical fines.
To sum up the coverage of Alpha Biz on the 18th, the Fair Trade Commission will soon decide on the level of sanctions against Coupang, the No. 1 player in the e-commerce industry.
The areas where Coupang will be sanctioned are reported to be subcontracting, abusing its trading status, and manipulating algorithms.
In particular, the amount of sanctions ordered by the FTC office is up to KRW 200 billion. The FTC plans to announce the size of the fine soon after deliberation by the plenary session.
According to the Korea Fair Trade Commission, Coupang has frequently preempted its position to make sales advantageous by placing pre-purchased items on top of its own mall through algorithm manipulation.
An official familiar with the internal affairs of the Fair Trade Commission told Alpha Biz, "Even if the plenary decision remains, the amount of fines set by the office of the Fair Trade Commission is beyond imagination," adding, "Coupang's unfair trade has gone too far."
