[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Engineering has secured a contract for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, with a total project cost estimated at 20 trillion won. This marks Hyundai's first major overseas nuclear project in 15 years since winning the Barakah nuclear project in the United Arab Emirates in 2009. The company will work in consortium with the American firm Westinghouse.
On the 4th (local time), Hyundai Engineering announced that it signed a design contract for the new construction of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant with the Bulgarian Nuclear Power Company (KNPP NB) at the Council of Ministers building in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The project involves the construction of two large nuclear reactors at the Kozloduy nuclear power complex, located approximately 200 kilometers north of Sofia, the capital. The first phase of design work has begun this year, with the second phase—design, procurement, and construction (EPC)—scheduled to be signed by the end of next year. The completion of the project is expected by 2035.
