[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines has reached a pivotal stage, triggering a significant shake-up in the domestic low-cost carrier (LCC) industry.

With Asiana Airlines’ subsidiaries, Air Seoul and Air Busan, set to consolidate under Jin Air, the market is witnessing the emergence of a "mega LCC." This restructuring is likely to prompt other LCCs to forge alliances and adjust strategies to remain competitive.

According to the aviation industry on December 2, Korean Air plans to operate Asiana Airlines as a subsidiary for the next two years. During this period, Jin Air will integrate with Air Busan and Air Seoul, with Jin Air, Korean Air’s largest and most established LCC subsidiary, leading the integration process.

The move is expected to redefine the competitive landscape of the Korean LCC market, paving the way for further industry realignments.
