[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] EcoPro BM and SK On have halted the construction of a cathode material plant in Canada, which was being developed in partnership with U.S. automaker Ford. The decision comes as Ford grapples with concerns over a potential "EV chasm," a period of temporary demand slowdown for electric vehicles, leading to uncertainty in the mass production timelines for key models.
According to Canadian media reports on the 18th, the construction of the plant in Bécancour, Quebec, which involves an investment of approximately 1.3 trillion KRW by the three companies, was paused earlier this month. This marks the second suspension, following an earlier delay in April due to issues with contractor selection.
The plant, with an annual production capacity of 45,000 tons, began construction in August last year. It is managed by EcoPro BM’s local subsidiary, EcoPro CAM Canada, with SK On and Ford investing in the project.
The deepening concerns over an EV market slowdown have significantly impacted the project. Ford, amid a global economic downturn, is reassessing its business plans, which has led to delays in the project. The initial target for mass production in the first half of 2026 is now expected to be pushed back further.
