[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Minyoung] The Asiana Airlines pilots' union (APU) is scheduled to meet with the European Commission next week to oppose the merger with Korean Air. The meeting is set for the 23rd of this month in Brussels, Belgium, and will involve EU officials responsible for competition and merger oversight.
The union, led by Chairman Choi Do-sung, plans to present their concerns about the merger's impact on the aviation industry, including potential issues related to employment succession and changes in route allocation rules. They are expected to request that the EU reject the merger.
Additionally, the union has initiated a public petition against the merger on the National Assembly's petition website. They argue that the merger would weaken the competitiveness of the aviation industry and reduce consumer choice. If the petition receives 50,000 signatures within 30 days, it will be submitted to the parliamentary committee for review.
