[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Kakao Entertainment is preparing to dissolve its Thai subsidiary following the decision to discontinue the ‘Kakao Webtoon’ service in Thailand by August 2025. This move marks a strategic pivot as the company seeks to streamline its global operations amid slowing revenue growth.
Launched in Thailand in 2021, the Kakao Webtoon service will be phased out after four years of operation. The decision follows similar exits from Taiwan and Indonesia, where Kakao also closed its local entities after halting webtoon services.
While discontinuing Kakao Webtoon, the company plans to continue offering content in Thailand through its alternative platform, KakaoPage. However, the Thai KakaoPage service will be managed directly from Kakao Entertainment’s headquarters in Korea, making the dissolution of the local entity inevitable.
Kakao’s Story division—including webtoons and web novels—recorded KRW 203 billion in revenue last year, down 5% from the previous year. The restructuring signals the company’s attempt to refocus its global content strategy and improve operational efficiency.
