[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Microsoft (MS) has announced plans to lay off approximately 9,000 employees globally, accounting for about 4% of its total workforce. This marks the company's fourth round of restructuring in 2024.

According to major outlets including CNBC on June 2 (local time), the latest layoffs will span across traditional departments such as sales and marketing, as well as the gaming division, affecting various roles, regions, and experience levels.

A Microsoft spokesperson stated, "We continue to adapt our organizational structure to ensure our company and teams are best positioned for success in a dynamic market environment."

Earlier this year, MS conducted several rounds of workforce reductions—cutting about 1% of staff in January based on performance, followed by more than 6,000 layoffs in May and at least 300 in June.

As of June 2023, Microsoft employed approximately 228,000 people, following a major layoff of 10,000 workers earlier that year. The company’s largest-ever layoff occurred in 2014 when it cut 18,000 jobs following its acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services business.
