[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 25th that it has signed a construction contract with an Asian shipowner for four 16,000 TEU container ships, valued at approximately 1.098 trillion KRW.
The vessels are scheduled for delivery by December 2027.
Including this deal, Samsung Heavy Industries has secured orders for 33 ships this year, amounting to approximately $6.8 billion. These include LNG carriers and ammonia transport vessels, achieving 70% of its 2024 annual target of $9.7 billion.
The global container ship market is expected to see increased demand for replacing aging vessels, driven by stricter environmental regulations.
According to the UK-based shipbuilding and shipping market analysis firm Clarkson Research, an average of 53 container ships with capacities exceeding 12,000 TEU are projected to be ordered annually between 2023 and 2027.
