[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics is strengthening its presence in the Indian market with an additional investment of ₹10 billion (approximately KRW 170 billion) in its home appliance manufacturing plant located in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The facility plays a critical role in Samsung’s India operations, producing major consumer electronics including TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines.

According to local media reports on April 25 (local time), Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, TRB Rajaa, officially announced the expansion, stating, "This expansion is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs and reaffirms Samsung’s trust in Tamil Nadu."

The Sriperumbudur plant is a key production hub, accounting for around 20% of Samsung’s total India revenue — which stood at approximately KRW 17.25 trillion during the 2022–2023 fiscal year.

Indian media outlets noted that the investment announcement comes at a crucial time. The Sriperumbudur facility recently faced worker protests demanding union recognition, wage increases, and improved working conditions.

Minister Rajaa emphasized, "This investment is a testament to Samsung’s confidence in Tamil Nadu’s workforce," and added that the state government will continue to support local operations.

The Sriperumbudur plant had previously drawn attention due to a series of labor disputes. In February, employees staged a sit-in protest following disciplinary action against several workers — the second major labor conflict within six months. In September of the previous year, hundreds of workers staged a five-week strike demanding wage hikes and union recognition, leading Samsung to accept some of the demands.
