[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the afternoon of September 5th, major South Korean telecom companies, including SK Telecom (SK Broadband), KT, and LG Uplus, experienced widespread disruptions in their fixed-line internet networks, affecting internet and IPTV services for over four hours. The exact cause of the issue is under investigation, and both government authorities and the companies are working on restoring services.

According to industry reports, the outages began around 5 p.m., affecting multiple regions across South Korea, including Seoul. SK Telecom and SK Broadband issued a notice explaining that the issue was caused by a malfunction in a specific manufacturer's device (AP), and they are working to resolve it quickly.

LG Uplus also identified the problem, citing a software issue with IPTIME routers, which are commonly purchased and used by customers. Since the telecom companies cannot specifically identify which subscribers are using the affected devices, they are still unable to determine the full scale of the impact. Additionally, they are investigating whether the disruption could be linked to a firmware update error or potential hacking attempts.
