[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The former head of the finance team at Osstem Implant, who was accused of embezzling 221.5 billion won in company funds, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The Supreme Court's third division (Supreme Court Justice Roh Jung-hee) said on the 14th that it has upheld the original ruling that sentenced Lee (45), who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, to 35 years in prison and a fine of 30 million won. The penalty is 91.7 billion won.
Lee worked as the head of Ostem Implant's financial team for about a year from November 2020, pocketing a total of 221.5 billion won from his company account to his securities account on 15 occasions. He was accused of embezzling it for personal use, such as stock investment.
Earlier, the first trial sentenced him to 35 years in prison and fined 30 million won and ordered him to collect about 115.1 billion won.
In the second trial, the sentence was maintained, but the penalty was changed to about 91.7 billion won, saying, "We drew up an agreement on damage recovery and civil mediation was made."
Lee's wife, sister and sister-in-law were also additionally indicted on charges of concealing criminal proceeds and tried with Lee. During the police investigation, they were found to have been involved in moving 855 gold bars (855kg) worth 68 billion won purchased by Lee as embezzlement money or withdrawing money.
They were sentenced to three years in prison, one and a half years in prison, and two years in prison in the second trial. The sentence was confirmed in January because he did not appeal.
