[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] BGF Retail, which operates a convenience store CU, officially launches a labor union for the first time in the convenience store industry. The launch date is the 12th, 54 days after some employees gathered in April to push for the establishment of a labor union.

According to a inews24 report on the 11th, the general meeting of the establishment of the "BGF Retail Branch of the National Office Financial Services Union" is scheduled for the 12th. The inaugural assembly is the official first step in announcing the launch of the union. On this day, a mobile vote will be held on the enactment of the branch operation regulations and the election of the first branch executive. Currently, the head of the branch and the secretary general are running as the first executives.

Earlier, employees who wanted to establish a union gathered in an anonymous chat room to select a representative and began accepting applications for union members on April 19.

CU is the number one convenience store industry in terms of number of stores and operating profit. It has recently surpassed 18,000 stores and is fiercely competing with GS25, the No. 1 seller.

BGF Retail has reduced its performance-based pay by 30% this year compared to the previous year, despite its record high performance last year. BGF Retail's sales last year were 8.2 trillion won and operating profit was 253.2 billion won, the highest ever. Sales rose 7.6 percent and operating profit rose 0.3 percent from 2022. Net profit also rose 1.2% year-on-year to 195.8 billion won.

In this regard, BGF Retail headquarters has established an ER (Employee Relations) team to respond to the union at the end of April.
