[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] South Korea, known as the "Republic of Coffee," has surpassed Japan in the number of Starbucks stores, reaching over 2,000 locations for the first time. Japan, with a population of over 120 million, has been overtaken in store count.
According to the Starbucks global website on Thursday, as of the end of last year, South Korea had 2,009 Starbucks stores, surpassing Japan by 18 stores.
South Korea has risen to third place globally in terms of the total number of Starbucks stores, following the United States and China.
Globally, there are 40,576 Starbucks locations. The U.S. has 17,049 stores, and China has 7,685, together accounting for 61% of the total.
South Korea has a population of approximately 52 million, while Japan’s population is 125 million, 2.4 times larger. Considering the populations of the U.S. (over 330 million) and China (1.4 billion), South Korea has more Starbucks stores per capita than these countries.
At the end of 2023, South Korea had 1,893 Starbucks stores, while Japan had 1,901, a difference of 8. In just one year, Japan added 90 stores, failing to reach 2,000, while South Korea added 116 stores, successfully surpassing Japan.
