[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, rivals in both domestic and international markets, have reportedly submitted a joint proposal worth up to USD 24 billion (approximately KRW 33 trillion) for Canada's submarine procurement project.
According to Canadian public broadcaster CBC on May 7, the two South Korean shipbuilders submitted their proposal to the Canadian government in early March under an unsolicited proposal framework. The bid includes the sale of 12 state-of-the-art KSS-III submarines.
In addition to the submarine offer, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean are also said to have proposed the establishment of a specialized maintenance facility. The KSS-III is a diesel-electric attack submarine capable of launching torpedoes and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).
Canada aims to introduce its first new-generation submarine by 2035. Hanwha Ocean reportedly stated that four submarines could be delivered by 2035, with the first vessel expected between 2030 and 2032. The remaining units would be delivered every two years, in accordance with the Canadian government's timeline.
Separately, Hanwha Aerospace has reportedly proposed the sale of multiple launch rocket systems and K9 self-propelled howitzers to the Canadian Army.
