[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Google and Microsoft (MS) continue to lay off employees, as reported by the U.S. economic media CNBC on the 3rd.
Google's parent company, Alphabet, plans to lay off more than 100 employees in its Google Cloud division.
According to internal documents obtained by CNBC, Google notified employees last week of layoffs in various departments of the cloud business, including sales, consulting, operations, and engineering.
Google stated officially that the layoffs are being carried out gradually across multiple teams to streamline market entry organizations more efficiently.
Google has been conducting ongoing layoffs since early last year. Last month, Google reportedly laid off more than 200 employees in key departments ahead of announcing its first-quarter results.
The recent quarter's revenue for Google Cloud, which holds most of Google's artificial intelligence (AI) technology, exceeded expectations at $9.57 billion (about 13 trillion won), a 28% increase from the same period last year. Operating profit surged to $900 million (about 1.23 trillion won), more than four times higher than the same period last year.
