[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The retail industry's employment capacity has been rapidly shrinking as domestic consumption has slowed down due to the slowing economy, with the number of Lotte Shopping's employees falling below 20,000 for the first time since 2009.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system on the 17th, Lotte Shopping, which represents the domestic distribution industry, had 19,676 employees last year. This is the first time that Lotte Shopping has fallen to the 10,000 mark since 2009, before it announced the number of contract employees together. In the aftermath of the COVID-19, the distribution industry has changed from offline to online, and recently, consumption has plummeted due to the economic slowdown.
Looking at the number of employees in Lotte Shopping's business division, such changes in shopping trends are evident. According to the Financial Supervisory Service's announcement, the number of employees in Lotte Shopping's department store division stood at 4,609 last year, a slight increase from the previous year (4,566).
