[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] According to the industry, Samsung Electronics recruited Benny Katibian, Vice President (senior vice president) of Qualcomm's engineering division at the end of last year. 

 

Vice President Katibian was the head of Samsung Austin Research Center (SARC) and Advanced Computing Lab (ACL), the core base of Samsung Semiconductor Chip Research and Development (R&D) of the US corporation. SARC and ACL are key research bases in the United States of the System LSI division, which is in charge of Samsung Electronics' system semiconductor development business.

Vice President Katibian is an expert in the development of semiconductors related to autonomous driving. Qualcomm was in charge of developing autonomous driving systems such as the Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) and later oversaw the development of autonomous driving chips as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the North American subsidiary of XPeng, a Chinese electric vehicle company.

Amid growing concerns over sluggish sales of major parts such as mobile SoC and image sensors, Samsung Electronics has decided to focus on the SoC market for vehicles, which has high expectations for market expansion. As the market position of the self-designed mobile SoC "Exynos" is shrinking, the company intends to increase its share of the battlefield market with visible results. 

 

"We plan to continue our future growth momentum through European premium original equipment manufacturer (OEM) companies and additional orders for autonomous driving at SoC for vehicles," Samsung Electronics said in a conference call after the recent announcement of its performance in the fourth quarter of last year.
