[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Last year, Korea Electric Power Corporation and Korea Gas Corporation suffered the largest-ever loss, putting more pressure on them to raise electricity and gas bills.

According to each company's announcement on the 26th, KEPCO's annual operating loss reached 32.6034 trillion won last year. It is 5.6 times more than the previous maximum of 2021 (5.8465 trillion won). In the fourth quarter of last year alone, it reached 10.767 trillion won, well above the previous record of 7.7869 trillion won in the first quarter of last year.

KEPCO's annual and quarterly operating losses both hit an all-time low. KEPCO has already raised electricity bills by 13.1 won per ㎾h in the first quarter of this year. This is the largest increase ever. It is widely expected that the quarterly increase in electricity bills will also be similar in the future.

Korea Gas Corporation's unpaid gas bills for civilian use (housing and business) were also estimated at 8.6 trillion won as of the end of last year. Uncollected amount refers to losses caused by selling gas at a low price or failing to raise fares on time.
