[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Samsung SDI will establish a joint battery plant with General Motors (GM), a U.S. automaker.

According to the battery industry on the 3rd, Samsung SDI and GM are expected to sign a business agreement to establish a joint plant in Michigan on the 8th (local time).

The annual production volume of the joint factories of both companies is estimated to be around 30∼50 gigawatt hours (GWh). According to estimates, the investment of both companies is expected to reach 3 trillion won to 5 trillion won.

If Samsung SDI establishes a joint battery plant in the U.S. with GM, it will be recorded as the second joint plant after Stellatis. Samsung SDI announced last year that it will establish a joint venture with global carmaker Stellatis and build a battery joint plant in Indiana, USA. The annual production of the battery joint plant with Stellatis is 23GWh. The goal of this factory is to be operated in 2025.
