[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] POSCO Future M (formerly POSCO Chemical) is building an NCA cathode material (anode material manufactured from lithium, nickel, cobalt, and aluminum as raw materials) plant in Pohang to produce cathode materials worth 40 trillion won in total, which was awarded from Samsung SDI.

This is the first time that POSCO Future M has built a factory exclusively for NCA cathode materials.

In January, POSCO Future M signed a contract with Samsung SDI to supply high-nickel NCA cathode materials worth about 40 trillion won for 10 years. Through this new plant construction, production capacity will be built to produce products supplied to Samsung SDI.

The total investment for the new NCA cathode material plant in Pohang, POSCO Future M, is KRW 392 billion, and it will be built in the Yeongilman 4th General Industrial Complex with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons. This is an amount that can be supplied to about 300,000 60kwh electric vehicles.

 

The Pohang NCA cathode materials plant will begin construction within the first half of this year and will produce and sell cathode materials from 2025. In 2023-2024, it plans to supply NCA cathode materials produced in some lines of the Gwangyang cathode materials plant to Samsung SDI. POSCO Future M plans to continuously expand NCA cathode material orders following the construction of a factory exclusively for NCA cathode materials.
