[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Electro-Mechanics has begun large-scale shipments of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) to BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer based in China. MLCCs are essential electronic components that store and discharge electricity to protect circuits, and are used in virtually all electronic devices.
According to a report by Maeil Business Newspaper on Tuesday, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has received final approval from BYD for MLCC supply and has commenced full-scale deliveries.
BYD is expected to produce approximately 5.5 million EVs this year. With an estimated 12,000 to 18,000 MLCCs required per vehicle, Samsung Electro-Mechanics could supply anywhere from tens to hundreds of billions of MLCC units.
The MLCCs being supplied are reportedly intended for automotive applications that require high reliability and long-term durability, such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Industry experts believe that Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ entry into the supply chain of the world’s top EV maker will accelerate its dominance in the automotive MLCC market. The company is also known to supply MLCCs to Tesla, the second-largest EV manufacturer globally.
