[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI will join hands with General Motors to build a joint battery plant in the U.S.

With an annual investment of 30 GWh, the total investment of the two companies amounts to 3 trillion won.

Samsung SDI announced on the 25th that it will build a joint plant with GM. 30GWh per year is capable of producing more than 350,000 electric vehicles per year. The company will produce half of its square and cylindrical batteries at the plant from 2026 and deliver them to GM's electric vehicle plant. Last month, Samsung SDI President Choi Yoon-ho signed an MOU with GM Chairman Mary Barra on a business trip to the U.S. to establish a joint plant.

Samsung SDI will operate a joint plant (23GWh per year) in Indiana, the U.S. with Stellatis in 2025, and will also join hands with GM to expand its supply to North America. GM is operating or constructing three joint plants in the United States with LG Energy Solutions at an annual capacity of 145 GWh. I joined hands with a Korean battery company until the fourth factory. This is to achieve the goal of having more than 1 million electric vehicle production facilities annually in North America by 2025 and further increasing production afterwards.

With this investment, Samsung SDI will be able to secure additional stable suppliers, while GM will be able to increase the number of models subject to IRA subsidies.
