[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] GS Caltex has decided to supply bio-ship oil, an eco-friendly fuel, to HMM vessels. Through this, the company plans to strengthen its eco-friendly energy business and speed up its overall green transformation (transition).

The company announced on the 26th that it has signed an 'Eco-friendly Bio Shipboard Oil Business Agreement (MOU)' with HMM. Under the agreement, GS Caltex will supply bio-shipboard oil to HMM vessels, while HMM will cooperate to secure demand. GS Caltex is the first South Korean refiner to supply bio-ship oil.

Bio-shipped oil is a product produced by mixing biodiesel based on waste materials with more than 80% less greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels and conventional ship oil. The advantage is that it can be used without modifying the existing ship engine.

Overseas, the use of bio-shipboard oil is increasing. According to GS Caltex, the use of bio-ship oil increased from 7% in the first quarter of last year to 10% in the fourth quarter based on ships using Rotterdam Port in the Netherlands.
