[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Kakao Bank will decide whether to renew the contract through due diligence ahead of the expiration of the contract to issue a real-name account with Coinone.

According to the financial sector on the 4th, Kakao Bank will conduct regular due diligence on Coinone for two days from the 8th to the 9th. This is the first time since Kakao Bank signed a contract with Coinone to issue a real-name account in August last year, and it is a regular due diligence for renewal. Previously, Coinone changed its real-name account issuing contract bank from NH Nonghyup Bank to Kakao Bank in November last year.

In this due diligence, Kakao Bank is expected to focus on the controversy over Coinone's "secret money listing," the status of anti-money laundering (AML) implementation, and performance. 

 

Earlier, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office arrested and indicted two former executives and employees of Coinone who pocketed billions of won in return for listing cryptocurrency for about two years and eight months from 2020. The prosecution estimates that there are at least 29 cryptocurrencies that they received secret money and listed on CoinOne, including "P-Coin," which was the starting point of the kidnapping and murder in Gangnam.

However, a Kakao Bank official said, "Nothing has been decided on whether to extend the contract again," adding, "It will be concluded depending on the results of the due diligence."
