[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] SK ON is planning to expand its product portfolio. The target is an NCMA battery that adds aluminum to nickel, cobalt, manganese (NCM).

According to the industry on the 14th, SK On is preparing to produce a pouch-type NCMA battery. It will be supplied to Hyundai Motor when it is completed. SK ON is equipped with batteries in Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicles such as 'Ionic 5', 'EV6' and 'GV60'.

In the meantime, SK ON has been mass-producing NCM pouch batteries for electric vehicles. Unlike domestic competitors who expanded from information technology (IT) devices to electric vehicles, they targeted electric vehicles first. As a latecomer, manufacturing skills such as square and cylindrical are still lacking. Therefore, virtually only a single product has been provided.

It is said that the NCMA pouch battery is being challenged while developing lithium phosphate iron (LFP) and rectangular batteries.

Recently, three domestic batteries have increased their battery performance by increasing nickel content. However, the more nickel, the less stable it is.
