[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] LG Display is expected to supply OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels for premium TVs to Samsung Electronics as early as this quarter.
Reuters quoted three sources and reported on the 16th (local time) that LG Display, which is suffering losses, will improve its profitability. OLED panels are five times more expensive than LCD (liquid crystal display) panels.
In particular, Samsung is expected to catch up with Sony, the second-largest global OLED TV market, through this contract.
LG Display's initial supply to Samsung Electronics is expected to be 77-inch and 83-inch white OLED (WOLED). It will supply 2 million units next year and expand them to 3 million to 5 million units.
2 million units are worth at least 1.5 billion dollars (about 2 trillion won), which is 20-30% of all large OLED panels produced by LG Display.
LG Display has been in the red for four consecutive quarters since the second quarter of last year. In the first quarter of this year alone, there was a deficit of more than KRW 1 trillion.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and LG Display did not reveal their position on this.
