[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering builds an overseas production plant for its independently developed ship engine, the Strong Engine, in Saudi Arabia.
"We established Makeen, a ship engine production joint venture with Saudi Aramco Development Company (SADCO) and Mansour, the Saudi Industrial Investment Corporation, and held a groundbreaking ceremony in Saudi Arabia's Ras Al Hair," Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering said on the 25th. Markin is the first Licensor business to receive royalties for strong engine technology.
Makeen will build a 150,000㎡ (about 45,000 pyeong) plant in the King Salman Shipbuilding Industrial Complex in eastern Saudi Arabia and start producing engines in the fourth quarter of 2025. It can produce 30 large engines for ships, 235 medium-sized engines and 160 pumps for ships annually.
"This is the first time to develop independently and produce a strong engine with original technology overseas," the company said. "Considering the demand for eco-friendly ships, we are also considering producing dual fuel engines using methanol."
