[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Samsung Electronics lost a patent invalidation trial with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech·).
According to the industry on the 28th, the US Intellectual Property Office (USPT) Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board dismissed three patent invalidation trials filed by Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics is in the process of patent infringement related to wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) with Caltech since 2021. Caltech filed a lawsuit claiming that Samsung Electronics infringed on five of its patents.
In response, Samsung Electronics launched a counterattack in November last year, filing an invalid trial to the effect that there was a problem with the patent itself. They argue that there is a problem with the patent itself due to a lack of progress or novelty, which is a patent registration requirement, or a problem with the screening process. However, as Samsung Electronics' claim is not accepted in this patent trial, it is expected to work against this lawsuit. On the contrary, Caltech's patent rights have become more solid.
Samsung Electronics will not accept the decision of the US Patent Tribunal and proceed with the appeal.
