[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Coupang posted higher sales in the second quarter of this year than the total of nine distribution sectors of E-Mart and Shinsegae for the first time.
According to the industry on the 17th, E-Mart (7.2711 trillion won) and Shinsegae (2.7324 trillion won) totaled 10.35 trillion won, Coupang 7.6749 trillion won, and Lotte Shopping 3.6222 trillion won.
Although E-Mart and Shinsegae are about 2 trillion won more than Coupang, the story will be different if they compare with distribution alone except for five non-distribution business subsidiaries such as Starbucks among E-Mart and Shinsegae.
Sales of nine distribution business sectors (discount stores, traders, specialty stores, SG.com, G-market, E-Mart 24, Everyday, Department Store, and Shinsegae Live Shopping) in E-Mart and Shinsegae are 7.36 trillion won, which is 314.1 billion won less than Coupang.
Coupang narrowed its sales gap with E-Mart and Shinsegae to 9.9 billion won in the first quarter and is ahead of 310 billion won for the first time in the second quarter.
In terms of operating profit in the second quarter, Coupang is the highest at 194 billion won. Lotte Shopping is 51.4 billion won and E-Mart and Shinsegae are 49.2 billion won.
