[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Motor's labor union declared a breakdown of negotiations in wage and collective negotiations this year and began the process for a strike.

Hyundai Motor's labor union declared the breakdown of the wage and collective agreement at the 17th round of negotiations held at the Ulsan plant's main building on the 18th.

The labor union plans to apply for mediation of the dispute at the National Labor Relations Commission on the same day, hold a temporary meeting of lawmakers on the 23rd to decide on the occurrence of the dispute and set the direction for the strike. On the 25th, a vote will be held on the pros and cons of disputes against union members.

If more than two-thirds of all members are in favor of the strike and the National Labor Relations Commission decides to suspend the adjustment, judging that there is a wide gap in labor-management positions, the union can go on a legal strike. If the union actually goes on strike, it will go on strike for the first time in five years, citing the breakdown of collective negotiations. The labor union of Hyundai Motor wrapped up its wage negotiations without a strike for four years until last year.

Industry sources say Hyundai Motor's labor union is likely to resume negotiations with the management to reach an agreement while taking steps to strike. Hyundai Motor's labor union declared a breakdown in the negotiation process and prepared for a strike last year when it reached a settlement of wage negotiations without strike.

The labor union included a 184,900 won increase in basic salary (excluding salary increases), a 30% net profit in the previous year as a bonus, and a 900% bonus in this year's wage request. It also called for an extension of the retirement age, currently 60 years old, to a maximum of 64 years old. In particular, there is a wide gap between labor and management over the issue of extending the retirement age.
