[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Hyundai announced on the 17th that the naming ceremony of the world's first methanol-powered container ship, "Laura Maersk’," was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the 14th (local time).
Laura Musk was built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, an affiliate of HD Hyundai Shipbuilding. It is 2,100 TEU (1TEU is a 20-foot container). It is the first of 19 methanol propulsion ships ordered by global shipping group "Apmoler-Mayersk" to HD Hyundai. Earlier, Maersk announced the introduction of methanol propulsion ships as the first step toward realizing 'carbon neutrality in 2040'. Methane is the next generation ship fuel that is attracting attention after liquefied natural gas (LNG). HD Hyundai has won the world's largest number of 43 methanol-powered container ships.
Laura Maersk departed from Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in July and arrived in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 13th. It sailed a total of 21,500㎞ in about two months.
