[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Absolics, a subsidiary of SKC, will receive a semiconductor subsidy from the U.S. government. This marks the first instance of a semiconductor materials and components company, as opposed to a semiconductor chip manufacturer, receiving such a subsidy from the U.S. government.

According to Maeil Business Newspaper on the 24th, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced on the 23rd (local time) that it had signed a Preliminary Memorandum of Terms (PMT) to provide Absolics with $75 million (approximately 101.5 billion won) in semiconductor production support under the CHIPS Act.

The subsidy is designated for Absolics' first glass substrate plant in Covington, Georgia. The $75 million subsidy represents 25% of the total investment cost of $300 million. The first plant has an annual production capacity of 12,000 square meters and was recently completed and is now undergoing trial operations. Commercial mass production is expected to begin in the first half of next year.

Absolics also plans to construct a second plant with an annual production capacity of 72,000 square meters. The investment in the second plant is expected to exceed $400 million.
