[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation (SNN) said on the 12th that it has signed a consortium agreement with Canada's Candu Energy and Italy's Ansaldo New Clear to jointly carry out Romania's Cervoda Nuclear Power Plant No. 1 facility improvement project.

The consortium will be in charge of improving old pressure pipes and other facilities for 30 years for further operation as the permission to operate Cerna No. 1 expires in 2026. Including infrastructure construction, the total cost of the project is 2.5 trillion won.

The ratio of participation in the project is under discussion, but KHNP's share is expected to be around 40% of the total. The formal contract is aimed at the first half of next year. The construction period is from January 2027 to August 2029.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. has made another achievement in Romania following a project to build a tritium removal facility (TRF) for nuclear power plant No. 1 than Cerna. The KHNP's order for a project to improve its nuclear power plant No. 1 from Cherna on the 12th is said to be the result of its recognition of South Korea's excellent nuclear power plant construction capabilities and business management capabilities.

Cervoda Nuclear Power Plant 1, which began commercial operation in 1996, will replace turbine and generator components for 30 years for further operation ahead of the expiration of the first operation license at the end of 2026. In the consortium, Canada's Candu Energy and Italy's Ansaldo New Clear will be in charge of designing atomic reactor and turbine generator systems and purchasing equipment, respectively, while Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power will be in charge of building infrastructure, including the entire construction and radioactive waste storage facilities.
