[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] POSCO International held a ceremony on the 17th (local time) to mark the completion of its production plant (PI-MEM) in Ramos Ariespe, Coauila, Mexico.
POSCO International began construction of its Gudong Motorcoa plant in July last year after early selecting northeastern Mexico as a production base to target North America by addressing the risk of trade barriers in the electric vehicle market and considering logistics competitiveness. Eighteen press units will be operated at the first plant, which has been completed on a total of 63,925 square meters of land, and the second plant will also begin construction in the first half of next year. If it is operated to the second plant in the future, it will establish an annual production system of 2.5 million units by 2030.
Ramos Ariespe, where the new plant is located, is the center of the auto industry in northeastern Mexico, where major automakers and parts factories are concentrated. It is only about 300㎞ away from the Texas border in the U.S., making it the best location to advance the North American eco-friendly car market.
Drive Motorcoa, produced at the Mexican plant, will be supplied to major carmakers in North America and used to manufacture driving motors for electric and hybrid vehicles.
To expand its eco-friendly mobility business, POSCO International plans to have a production system of 2 million units in Korea and 2.5 million units in Mexico by 2030 and operate overseas plants in each hub, including Poland, China and India, to establish a global production and sales system of more than 7 million units per year.
