[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI signed an electric vehicle battery supply contract with Hyundai Motor.
Samsung SDI announced on the 23rd that it will supply batteries for Hyundai's next-generation European electric vehicles for seven years from 2026 to 2032.
This is the first time Samsung SDI and Hyundai have signed a supply contract for electric vehicle batteries. The supply is known to be about 500,000 electric vehicles.
Under the contract, Samsung SDI will supply the sixth-generation rectangular battery P6 under development to Hyundai Motor. P6 is a product that maximizes energy density by increasing the proportion of nickel in NCA (nickel, cobalt, aluminum) anode materials to 91% and applying silicon materials unique to cathode materials. Samsung SDI will produce the P6 at its Hungarian plant and supply it to Hyundai's European plant.
Through this contract, Samsung SDI has secured Hyundai Motor as a new customer, which has become the largest finished car maker in Korea and a global big three automobile manufacturer.
Samsung SDI expects that it will be an important opportunity to expand the use of its flagship battery, the square battery.
