[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] As of the third quarter of this year, the number of "mobile communication (MNO) subscription lines" of LG Uplus, South Korea's third-largest telecommunications industry, surpassed the second-largest KT for the first time.

This week, the Ministry of Science and ICT is scheduled to officially announce its subscription to wireless communication services as of September, and the results are also drawing keen attention.

According to the current status of subscribers released by LG Uplus through the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic public system on the 8th, the number of MNO subscription lines in the third quarter rose 15.3% year-on-year to 18,292,000. KT's MNO subscription line, which announced its performance on the same day, was 17.735 million, which is smaller than LG Uplus.

KT still ranks second in terms of the number of MVNO subscription lines, but this is also a slight difference. KT's number of subscription lines is 24.93 million, narrowing the gap with LG Uplus (23.82 million) to one million.

LG Uplus has been rapidly increasing the number of subscription lines this year. As of August, the number of MNO subscription lines announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT was 17,099,384 by KT. LG Uplus was tallied at 16,671,966, narrowing the gap between the two companies to 400,000. In terms of market share, KT accounted for 21.4% and LG Uplus accounted for 20.9%, which was only 0.5% point difference.

In addition, LG Uplus is focusing on increasing subscribers by launching "Nerget," a customized plan that includes a low-cost 5G mobile communication (5G) plan priced at around 30,000 won.
