[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] While annual sales of costco, a warehouse-type discount store in the U.S., surpassed 6 trillion won for the first time, donations to Korean society have decreased.
On top of that, it was found to have sent dividends larger than its annual operating profit to the U.S. headquarters.
According to an audit report released by Costco Korea on the electronic disclosure system on the 21st, the company's sales for this fiscal year (from September last year to August this year) were 6.678 trillion won, up 9.6% from a year earlier.
This is the first time Costco has surpassed KRW 6 trillion in annual sales since 1998 when it started operating in Korea.
Costco Korea operates stores in 18 regions across the country, including Seoul. The stake is 100% owned by Costco Holsale International of the United States.
Operating profit for this fiscal year was 188.7 billion won, down 2.8% from the previous year. However, net profit for the current term was 141.7 billion won, up 39.5% from the previous year.
On the other hand, donations for this fiscal year amounted to 1.18 billion won, down 8.1% from the previous year.
Costco Korea allocated 200 billion won to Costco's headquarters in the U.S., about three times the dividend of 70.9 billion won in the previous fiscal year.
Costco, which is making great achievements in Korea, has been criticized for being stingy in improving the environment for domestic workers, such as the death of workers and the non-establishment of a workplace daycare center.
