[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The establishment of the second data center, which Kakao had been pushing for at Seoul National University's Siheung campus in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, failed.
Kakao said on the 23rd, "We have been discussing the establishment of a data center (IDC) with Seoul National University in various ways, but we have decided to pursue it in other regions."
Kakao signed a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University in April last year to create a data center. At that time, Kakao announced its plan to establish a data center in Siheung Campus in Seoul with an area of about 19 times the size of a soccer field and a power capacity of 100 megawatts. The goal was to start construction next year and complete it in 2026.
Since then, it has been in the stage of taking administrative procedures such as licensing urban planning, but it has finally decided not to proceed during consultations with Seoul National University. Instead, we are reviewing the candidate sites in other regions. The data center, which was recently completed in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, will operate normally in the first quarter of next year.
