[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyosung Heavy Industries and POSCO International are strengthening their local production to target the global market.
On June 12, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it will expand its ultra-high voltage transformer plants in Memphis, USA, and Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, to respond to the increasing global demand for power infrastructure.
Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to invest approximately 100 billion KRW to expand the total production capacity of its ultra-high voltage transformers by more than 40%. This decision is driven by the increasing demand for power infrastructure due to the rise of renewable energy, high electricity consumption from artificial intelligence (AI), and electric vehicles.
In Memphis, Hyosung Heavy Industries will add a test line and expand test and production facilities at its ultra-high voltage transformer plant. The company aims to double the production capacity of the Memphis plant compared to its current level.
On June 11, POSCO International held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new drive motor core plant (PI-PEM) in Brzeg, Opole Voivodeship, Poland.
The new POSCO International plant in Poland will cover an area of 100,000 square meters and is expected to be completed by mid-2025. The plant will initially produce 1.03 million drive motor cores for Hyundai and Kia's locally produced electric vehicles in Europe, with full-scale operations starting in the second half of 2025.
Drive motor cores are key components for the powertrains of nearly all types of eco-friendly vehicles, excluding traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, and are expected to see increased demand in the future. POSCO International plans to target major European electric vehicle manufacturers, establishing a production system at the Poland plant to produce 1.2 million drive motor cores annually by 2030.
