[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] LG Energy Solution is moving the weight quickly to the next generation cylindrical battery.
According to industries on the 12th, LG Energy Solutions is considering building a 46-series cylindrical battery production line at its plant in Nanjing, China.
Just as it changed its plan to produce 2170 (21mm diameter × 70mm high) batteries at its Arizona plant in October to 46 series, China is also planning to produce 46 series instead of 2170.
Initially, LG Energy Solution planned to foster its Arizona plant as a key production base for next-generation cylindrical batteries, including 4680 products, while using the Namkyung plant as a 2170 base.
However, growing customer and market demand for 46 series cylindrical batteries led to the construction of the 46 series instead of adjusting the production size of the 2170 at the Nanjing plant.
Although no specific customers of the Nanjing plant have been confirmed, it is believed to be aimed at responding to demand from finished car makers in China. It is also expected to supply European automakers.
The 46 Series is the next generation of electric car batteries. Energy capacity is five times larger and output is six times higher than the existing 2170 battery. As mileage increases by 16%, production costs can be reduced by 54%. Tesla's first announcement in 2020 sparked competition for commercialization.
It is heard that LG Energy Solution has increased energy capacity by using NCMA (nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum) anode material with more than 90% nickel content, and increased cost competitiveness with Tabless that connects power supply and batteries.
