[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics has set a goal of earning more than 11 trillion won in operating profit in its semiconductor business this year.
The company has raised its profit and loss target in the semiconductor sector by nearly 25 trillion won compared to last year, which is estimated to have posted an operating loss of 13 trillion won.
According to industry sources on the 2nd, Samsung Electronics' semiconductor (DS) division executives set their operating profit target for this year at 11.5 trillion won. This target was recently delivered to DS executives and employees. DS division is expected to take charge of 'one-third' of Samsung Electronics' total operating profit (33.8109 trillion won, average forecast of securities firms) this year.
The DS division is estimated to have recorded an operating loss of around 13 trillion won last year. The company has vowed to achieve an operating surplus of more than 11 trillion won in a year because there are clear signs of a "semiconductor thaw" in the market recently.
Fixed transaction prices of DRAM and NAND flash products rose for three consecutive months from October to December last year. Analysts say that the oversupply situation has been resolved due to manufacturers' cuts in production and reduced inventory, and orders have resumed mainly for smartphone and PC companies.
It is also expected that mass production of high value-added products such as Compute Express Link (CXL) DRAM will begin in earnest.
