[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI has invested in nickel in Canada to secure nickel, a key battery mineral.
According to foreign media on the 16th, Samsung SDI acquired an 8.7% stake in Canadian nickel for $ 18.5 million (about 24.5 billion won).
The stake investment will give Samsung SDI the right to secure 10% of nickel from the Crawford nickel mine project in Ontario, which is being pursued by Nickel, Canada, for $105 million.
Under a mutual agreement with Canadian nickel, Samsung SDI will expand its nickel reserves to 20 percent over the next 15 years.
Samsung SDI, which is producing high-nickel NCA (nickel, cobalt, and aluminum) batteries as its main product, has been supplying nickel and other minerals from Australia and Chile.
It is estimated that Canadian nickel equity investment has provided a more stable supply chain.
