[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On June 12, SK Telecom (SKT) and AI semiconductor startup Rebellions announced their plan to merge SKT's subsidiary SAPEON Korea with Rebellions to establish South Korea's leading AI semiconductor company.

The market for Neural Processing Units (NPUs) dedicated to AI tasks is rapidly growing due to the increasing integration of AI across various industries, resulting in intense competition among global companies to dominate this space.

Both companies anticipate that the next two to three years will be a critical "golden time" for South Korea to secure a leading position in the global AI semiconductor market. Consequently, they have decided to expedite the merger process. After conducting due diligence and securing shareholder approval, they aim to finalize the merger agreement in the third quarter and launch the integrated company by the end of the year.

Following the merger, SKT will act as a strategic investor, actively supporting the new entity's entry into the global AI semiconductor market and enhancing South Korea's competitiveness in this sector. SAPEON's shareholders, including SK Square and SK Hynix, will also support the newly formed company.

This merger is expected to combine the strengths and expertise of both SAPEON and Rebellions, accelerating their ability to innovate and compete on a global scale in the rapidly evolving AI semiconductor industry.
