[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Kakao's content subsidiary, Kakao Piccoma, is winding down its operations in Europe. The decision comes approximately three years after entering the European market, attributed to slower-than-expected growth in the European webtoon market, including France.
According to industry sources on the 13th, Kakao Piccoma is in the process of completely withdrawing its local subsidiary, 'Piccoma Europe,' established in Paris, France in September 2021. The company commenced local services in Europe in March 2022, introducing Korean webtoons available on platforms like KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon to the European market. However, with the digital comics and webtoon market in France not growing as anticipated, the decision to exit the European market was made.
In the future, Kakao Piccoma is expected to expand its services in its primary market, Japan.
Piccoma has achieved remarkable success, ranking first in terms of consumer spending across all categories, including games, in the Japanese application market last year.
