[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Nongshim, a ramen company, will delete the Chinese label on the "Kimchi Ramen" bowl noodle wrapper sold in the U.S.
According to Nongshim on the 26th, two types of kimchi ramen sold in the United States will be removed from the Chinese label of Kimchi ramen.
"If the products currently sold in the U.S. are exhausted, we will proceed to change the package," a Nongshim official said. "The timing of application will depend on whether the existing products are sold out or not."
Nongshim started to change the package because it marked Chinese 辣白菜 on kimchi ramen sold in the U.S., sparking controversy.
Seo Kyung-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, pointed out on social networking services (SNS) on the 25th that kimchi was written in Chinese on the surface of products sold in the U.S. by ramen companies.
"辣白菜 is a food of pickled cabbage in northeastern China, which is completely different from our kimchi," Professor Seo said. "The use of the wrong Chinese mark will only provide another excuse to China."
