[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] It was revealed that Samsung Display lost its first place in market share to Chinese display company BOE in the foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) market in the fourth quarter of last year.
According to market research firm Display Supply Chain Consultant (DSCC) on the 31st, Samsung Display's foldable OLED market share fell to 36% in the fourth quarter from 76% in the third quarter of last year, the lowest since the first quarter of 2021.
During the same period, BOE's market share rose from 16% to 42%, surpassing Samsung Display.
Since entering the foldable market in the third quarter of 2019, Samsung Display has maintained its top shipments of foldable panels in all quarters except the first quarter of 2021.
However, as the main customer, Samsung Electronics, suffered sluggish sales of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, the fourth-quarter panel shipments of these models decreased by 80% compared to the previous quarter, leading to a decrease in market share.
On the other hand, thanks to Huawei's smartphone sales, BOE achieved a significant increase in market share by increasing panel supply by 68% over the same period. Huawei's procurement of foldable panels rose 122% in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter.
