[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will send a small module reactor (SMR) research and development team to the US TerraPower next month.
TerraPower is the next nuclear energy company founded by Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft.
HD Hyundai announced on the 5th that HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., an intermediate holding company, recently held a technology exchange meeting for joint development of molten salt reactors in Washington, U.S., along with TerraPower, Southern Company and Core Power of the U.K., which are leading nuclear energy technology. TerraPower is a SMR developer founded in 2008 by Bill Gates, and Southern Company is the largest energy company in the southern United States. Core Power is a British company that is developing nuclear propulsion ships.
The molten salt reactors jointly developed by these companies are one of the fourth-generation reactors and are considered the most suitable for offshore nuclear power generation because they are safe and efficient. The target date for commercialization is 2035.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering plans to send a SMR R&D team to TerraPower in the United States next month. Starting with joint research, the plan is to speed up the development of the offshore nuclear market, which is drawing attention as the next generation of clean energy. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering invested $ 30 million in TerraPower in 2022 for the development of offshore nuclear power generation and nuclear propulsion ships.
