General Motors Chairman Mary Barra met with Samsung and LG executives to discuss ways to cooperate

[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Mary Barra General Motors (GM) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who visited Korea, met with executives of Samsung and LG's battery and electronics affiliates on the 7th to discuss ways to cooperate.

The chairman of Barra visited Samsung's Seocho office in Seocho-gu, Seoul early in the morning and met with Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, Choi Joo-sun, CEO of Samsung Display, Jang Duk-hyun, CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Lee Jung-bae, head of Samsung Electronics' memory business division. Barra seems to have met with the presidents of Samsung affiliates and discussed the entire business of batteries, semiconductors, and displays.

After the meeting, Choi Yoon-ho and Choi Joo-sun declined to comment on reporters' questions about the meeting.

Samsung SDI is building a battery joint plant with GM in Indiana, USA, aiming to operate in 2026.

The two companies plan to invest more than $3 billion (about 4 trillion won) to build a plant with an annual output of more than 30 gigawatt hours (GWh).

Samsung Display is targeting the automotive display market and supplying organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels to global automakers. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also actively expanding its electronics business recently.

Michael Mauser Harman, CEO, who oversees Samsung's electronics and audio business, also visited Korea and met with Barra chairman. Barra seems to have discussed the supply of cutting-edge digital cockpits, telematics, and audio with Harman CEO.

Barra also visited the LG Twin Tower in Yeouido, Seoul, this afternoon. It is known that he met with Shin Hak-chul, vice chairman of LG Chem, Kim Dong-myung, president of LG Energy Solutions, and Cho Joo-wan, president of LG Electronics.

Currently, LG Group is working with GM in many ways, including batteries and battlefields.

LG Energy Solutions has established a joint venture (JV) with GM to operate a battery plant in the United States.

LG Electronics supplies automobile parts such as infotainment, telematics, and powertrain to GM.
