Korea Exchange Reports 98 Cases of Unfair Trading in 2023

[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The Korea Exchange (KRX) has revealed that a total of 98 cases of unfair trading were identified in 2023, following investigations into abnormal trading.
On Wednesday, the KRX Market Surveillance Committee reported that it had forwarded 98 cases of suspected unfair trading to the Financial Services Commission (FSC) after examining unusual trading activities last year.
Among these, insider trading accounted for the largest share, with 59 cases (60.2%). Fraudulent trading followed with 18 cases (18.4%), and market manipulation accounted for 16 cases (16.3%).
There were also 12 cases related to tender offers. The number of insider trading cases increased from 43 in 2023 to 59 in 2024.
In contrast, the number of fraudulent trading and market manipulation cases decreased by 41.9% and 30.4%, respectively, compared to the previous year, due to tougher regulations and a sluggish market environment.
By market, the majority of cases were on the KOSDAQ (72 cases, 73.5%), followed by the KOSPI (24 cases, 24.5%), KONEX (1 case, 1.0%), and derivatives (1 case, 1.0%).
The number of individuals involved in unfair trading also decreased, with an average of 15 people per case, down from 20 in the previous year.
In terms of types of cases, fraudulent trading accounted for the highest proportion among the accused, making up 88.9% (16 out of 18 cases), followed by market manipulation at 50.0% (8 out of 16 cases), and insider trading at 30.5% (18 out of 59 cases).
