[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] On the 8th, amidst rainy conditions, the nationwide Samsung Electronics labor union's general strike commenced at 11 AM, with an estimated participation of over 6,000 union members. The strike resolution meeting took place in front of the H1 gate at Samsung Electronics' Hwaseong plant in Gyeonggi Province.
According to the union, approximately 6,540 members (as estimated by the union) from facilities in Giheung, Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, Onyang, Gumi, and Gwangju attended the rally, with 5,211 members participating from semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, and development sectors alone.
Earlier, the union had anticipated over 5,000 of the 8,115 respondents to a strike survey would participate in the actual strike.
The nationwide Samsung Electronics labor union stated, "Far more members than expected have participated in the general strike," emphasizing, "With over 5,000 members just from semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, and development sectors present, we will definitely achieve production disruptions."
